Position: General Manager

In October 2005 I felt I was ready for a new challenge and although I had researched TJ's via the internet, nothing prepared me for the impact of my first store visit. The diversity of product range, big brands, discounted prices, all in a fast paced large environment convinced me that a GM's role at TJ's would be both exciting and challenging.

I joined the company in November 2005 and knew immediately that I had made the right choice. It is considered a cliché to say that every day within retail is different, but within TJ's it is a certainty, often a reactive, instinctive culture which can be both frustrating and challenging, but ultimately rewarding.

At TJ's as in every company there are procedures and guidelines that need to be followed, but beyond that there is real empowerment that allows me to utilise my management, merchandising and retail skills, to make commercial decisions that directly influence the success of the store. GMs are actively encouraged to be out on the sales floor, working with the store team to maximise every opportunity, and interacting with our customers.

The company is going through some exciting changes where challenges and ideas from all levels are welcomed, and I feel that I can make a difference not only at store level but within the company.
