Melanie Shan
Position: Assistant Buyer Level 3 (Accessories & Footwear)
Mel joined TJ’s in 2002 as a Sales Assistant in our London Road store and within 6 months her talent was recognised in her promotion to Supervisor.
Working in the store gave Mel a great insight into what TJ’s was about and sparked her passion for the retail industry. Most importantly, Mel learned about the product and it was this experience that gave her aspirations to move into Buying.
On completing her degree, Mel decided to apply for a position in the Buying Department and was successful. She started work as a Buying Assistant in August 2006 and loved it from the word go.
It only took a year for Mel to be promoted to Assistant Buyer and since this promotion she has been working her way through the various levels. She is currently working towards Level 3, after which she wants to go on and become a Buyer and she believes that TJ’s will give her that opportunity.
’TJ’s is an exciting Company to work for because the pace is so fast and its always changing. This presents lots of new challenges and opportunities. There is always something to work towards.’
What Mel loves most about her current role is the opportunity she gets to put together a range and see the results when it’s out in stores.
Asked whether there are any particular challenges in her role, Mel responded ’You have to be able to manage your time effectively, balance priorities and delegate effectively!’
